MY NAME IS NESTOR CUMMINGS, SON OF PRINCE AND BESSIE CUMMINGS OF SIX ROADS, BRUNSWICK, AND L'ESTERRE, CARRIACOU.
IT HAS BEEN MY SINCERE PLEASURE AND PRIVILAGE TO HAVE KNOWN PETER ALEXIS FROM SINCE 1956, JUST ABOUT FIFTY YEARS.
I CAN TRULY SAY THAT PETER'S PRESENCE ON THIS EARTH HAS BEEN A BENEFIT FOR MANY PEOPLE.
AT A TIME WHEN FRANKIE LYMAN AND THE TEENAGERS WERE SINGING ABOUT NOT BEING A JUVENILE DELINQUENT, PETER WAS ALREADY A ROLE
MODEL AND AN EXAMPLE FOR HIS PEERS. HE WAS, AS MY FATHER PUT IT, "A RESPECTABLE YOUNG MAN FROM A RESPECTABLE FAMILY." THUS
HE WAS ALWAYS WELCOMED IN OUR HOUSE AND THE HOMES OF MANY.
IN THE 1970'S AND 1980'S, WE WORKED TOGETHER IN BROWNSVILLE, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, WHERE I TAUGHT CHILDREN IN THE CLASSROOM
AND HE CONTROLLED, COUNSELLED, AND GUIDED MOST OF THE SAME CHILDREN IN THE STREETS. HIS INFLUENCE KEPT A LOT OF THEM FROM
A LIFE IN JAIL.
HE USED TO ATTEND CARRIACOU CULTURAL ACTIVITIES SUCH AS THE BOAT RIDES TO BEAR MOUNTAIN STATE PARK, ACCOMPANIED BY THE CALYPSO
MUSIC OF THE LATE, GREAT MUSICIAN AND COUSIN, SYD JOE, AND HIS BAND, AND HE WAS THERE AT A WIDE VARIETY OF FAMILY EVENTS.
HE KEPT IN TOUCH WITH OUR FAMILY WHEN WE LIVED ON MACDONOUGH STREET, MAPLE STREET, AND BARBEY STREET, IN BROOKLYN, AND EVEN
WHEN WE MOVED TO FLORIDA SOME EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO.
IN FLORIDA, HE MADE IT HIS BUSINESS TO ATTEND MY MOTHER'S BIRTHDAY PARTY, AND HE WAS THERE VISITING HER A MONTH BEFORE SHE
PASSED AWAY IN JULY, 2006, AT AGE 93.
PETER WAS KNOWN BY ALL TO HAVE A HIGHLY DESIRABLE CARRIACOU CHARACTERISTIC: CONSIDERATION--THAT IS, TANGIBLE RESPECT FOR EVERYONE
AS EXPRESSED IN PROVIDING FOR THE PHYSICAL, EDUCATIONAL, MEDICAL, AND SPIRITUAL NEEDS OF PEOPLE BY GETTING INVOLVED WITH PROVIDING
FOR THEM AND HELPING TO BUILD SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS AND NOT HINDERING THE ENHANCEMENT OF THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF PEOPLE.
WHILE WORKING IN BROOKLYN, PETER, A POLICE OFFICER AND LATER A DETECTIVE, USED TO PERSONALLY WALK ELDERLY PEOPLE AND WOMEN
SAFELY TO THEIR DESTINATIONS ALMOST ON A DAILY BASIS.
PETER URGED THE YOUNG TO PURSUE HIGHER EDUCATION, AND HE OFTEN SPOKE ABOUT LIVING A CLEAN, PRODUCTIVE LIFE IN WHICH THE WELL
BEING OF MANY WOULD BE IMPROVED IN WAYS SIMILAR TO THE MANNER UTILIZED BY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE FROM CARRIACOU WHO WENT ACROSS
THE PLANET AS SEAMEN, ARTISANS, LABORERS, AND PROFESSIONALS
**AS EARLY AS IN THE 1840'S, SAILING AROUND THE WORLD CARRYING CARGO ON MERCHANT SHIPS, LIKE CAPTAIN HUGH MULZAC OF CARRIACOU'S
NEIGHBOR, UNION ISLAND.
**IN SOUTH AMERICA WHERE THEY HELPED CONSTRUCT THE PANAMA CANAL IN THE 1890'S.
**IN CUBA, WHERE THEY CUT SUGAR CANE IN PLACES LIKE CAMAGUAY, SANTIAGO, AND BARAGUA, IN THE EARLY 1900'S.
**IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO, WHERE THEY BUILT PIARCO AIRPORT AND DUG PITCH AT FYSABAD WITH THE LATE URIAH BUTLER TO MAKE THE
WORLD'S PAVED ROADS, IN THE 1920'S AND 1930'S.
**IN VENEZUELA, WHERE THEY DRILLED FOR OIL, IN THE 1930'S AND 1940'S.
**IN ARUBA, WHERE THEY REFINED OIL AND BUILT THE GRAND TOURIST HOTELS, IN THE 1940'S AND 1950'S.
**AND IN ENGLAND, HOLLAND, CANADA, AND THE UNITED STATES, WHERE THEY HELPED TO BUILD THE SUBWAYS, WATER TUNNELS, BUILDINGS,
AND ECONOMIES OF THESE MAJOR INDUSTRIAL NATIONS,
ALL THE WHILE SENDING MONEY "HOME" TO SUPPORT AND EDUCATE THEIR CHILDREN AND ENABLE OTHERS TO DEVELOP THEIR CAREERS TO MAKE
A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.
PETER WAS NOT HERE FOR A LONG TIME, FOR AS AH WEE KNOW, CARRIACOU PEOPLE TEND TO LIVE WELL INTO THEIR EIGHTIES AND NINETIES.
BUT HE SERVED US WELL WHILE HE WAS HERE!
IF HE WAS TO LEAVE A MESSAGE FOR US, I THINK THAT HE WOULD SAY "DO THE RIGHT THING. KNOW AND APPRECIATE YOUR CULTURE; UNDERSTAND
YOUR HISTORY AND WHAT YOUR ANCESTORS HAVE DONE FOR YOU; RAISE YOUR CHILDREN WELL; RESPECT YOUR ELDERS; AND WALK GOOD WITH
EVERYONE."
